At first glance, Vivekananda HR, Co-founder of bike rental platform Bounce, seems like any other guy. Dressed in a casual T-shirt and jeans, Vivekananda has an unassuming air about him. Now, if you have ever commuted in Bengaluru, you may have noticed the bright yellow and red Bounce scooters parked outside Metro stations. For commuters in Bengaluru, as with those in the 11 other cities that Bounce operates in, these daily commute bikes are an answer to their last-mile woes.
It has clocked over 1. The idea to start Wicked Ride came to them when Anil had to wait 12 months for a Royal Enfield after placing his order for one. The team later began offering daily commute bikes under the Metro Bikes label, rightfully named after the source of their idea to start what would later be called Bounce. Currently, the reason last- and first-mile commute is a challenge in India is because infrastructure development in the country is not moving at the same pace as urbanisation, especially in the top five metros, says Vivek.
Also read: Micro-mobility: the next wave of urban transportation in India. To address this challenge, the team looked at different modes of transport - cars, two-wheelers, and cycles.
They chose two-wheelers, as it seemed like the natural choice. Still, at the time, there were hardly any players in the space. The team started by using revenues generated from Wicked Ride to assemble a fleet of 20 scooters. They also raised a grant of Rs 12 lakh from the Toyota Mobility Foundation, which helped them create a simulation experiment at the Byapannahalli Metro station in eastern Bengaluru. Vivek says the team then began with working with people on the ground to offer this service: one person would hand over the bike keys, get the user to sign paper documentation, and then hand over the bikes.
They also worked with people in the near-adjacent suburb of Whitefield to collect the keys and bikes. To make that ride better, Bounce began working on the hardware and technology to build the dockless scooter-sharing model. Vivek explains that the simulation study helped them realise the demand in the sector. This would help users unlock the vehicles without a key, drive it to where they wanted in the city, and drop it off at their destination, wherever that may be.
For now, Bounce says it has enough cash to keep it going. Along with the equity infusion, Bounce has also raised debt capital for asset acquisition from Flipkart Co-founder Sachin Bansal. According to its RoC filings, Bounce revenues grew to Rs 5. For the same period, losses widened from Rs 3.Vivekananda Hallekere, WickedRide on bringing global ideas to local market
Bounce also acquired the India assets of the Chinese cycle sharing company, Ofo, last year. Bounce's current bike-rental pricing -- Rs 5 per kilometre and Rs 0. It's even cheaper than travelling in an autorickshaw. The company's pricing model works like this: the cost of petrol works out to Rs 1.
This works out to over Rs 4 per km. If you charge anything above that you start making Re 1 for every kilometre.
However, the team can further reduce this cost, and that is where electric vehicles EVs come into the picture. The cost of electricity significantly pulls down the overall price to Rs 0. The team is currently looking to add more electric vehicles and is working with different vendors and partners for the same. Vivekananda, Anil and Varun faced the same problem, too. Owning a bike seems to be a good option, but daily traffic woes convinced them to move away from this thought.
What if you could just hire a bike for a day, enjoy your ride and be back home safe without any kinds of pressures? We always dreamt of riding bikes like Harley Davidson, Triumph and BMWs, and used to drool over these bikes every time we glimpsed one of them. The idea for Wicked Ride came from their shared dream of working on innovative ideas.
But, the craze for bikes superseded all that. One fine day we were discussing on some idea in the list and suddenly we decided to pool some money to buy a nice, powerful and beautiful bike.
That's when the business of starting a luxury bike rental Company cropped up and we decided to run a pilot after some research on this particular business model. We did surveys during the pilot to understand what our fleet should be over a period, pros and cons of doing this in Indian environment and the response from the pilot gave us the confidence to expand. The team first did a pilot to understand the market for their choices over a period of months.
They also had to spend time understanding the various rules and regulations laid down by the Indian Government for fleet services. It graced Wicked Ride on 3 April Safety of the riders is also another critical area such startups need to focus on.
Speaking about this, Vivek shared. But, the immediate plan to scale is to move towards a franchisee model. Started with the passion to fulfill the dream of every biker to experience riding high-end bikes, the team has a long way to go ahead. To further fuel this passion to ride a luxury bike, the team is getting into organizing expeditions.
Currently, Wicked Ride does not charge for these training sessions, and they receive immense support for their initiative by women biking enthusiasts in the state. Today, where many startups are trying their bit to move away people from ownership to renting vehicles, this renting bike model seems exciting. There is definitely a market gap that Wicked Ride is trying to address, but their operations and service experience shall decide their future.
Replicating this model across various cities successfully is their immediate concern. Go check their website. Wicked Ride started with a fleet of 8 motorcycles. The greatest experience of riding a Harley-Davidson for the first time in life, is what we were happy to offer to a lot of people, for many of whom it was a childhood fantasy.
After the Street from Harley-Davidson, we set our eyes on bigger and more Harley-Davidson motorcycles. We saw a post for a used Super low and out motorcycle lust got better of us and we managed to get it at the same time as our first Street Every time we rode these motorcycles, the attention they demanded was massive. It was an awesome head turner. Every minute of our journey has been exciting and adventurous.
We remember those days when everybody laughed at us for renting premium motorcycles in India and most importantly without any deposit. We cherish the days when we had to work with various Government departments in getting the license. We remember when we travelled to Goa to meet the Transport Commissioner to get a set of standard documents so that we can share it with rest of the states.
We are thankful for every officer of Government in believing in the potential in our model to promote tourism and provide an alternate way of touring. Special thanks to the Rajasthan, Gujarat and Karnataka Transport Departments for believing in us and granting our first licenses in most of the places we had applied. We got good inputs and support from Rajasthan Transport Department on how to go about in Rajasthan.
For the first time in our life we were so happy working and interacting with Government agencies. They were so helpful and worked with us closely in implementing the scheme. We now are shocked and happy to see the number of motorcycle and bike rental companies which have come up.
We are happy that we did the ground work and paved way for a whole new segment of the travel and tourism industry. We definitely want more and more companies to come in as the segment itself is very young and new. A lot of time, effort and money has to be spent on bringing about the awareness. Now this can be shared by all the players in the segment.
Now Wicked Ride is focusing on bringing the best of motorcycling on one platform and make it easily accessible. Wicked Ride also has been working closely with various agencies in solving the last mile connectivity problems seen in metros and Tier II cities.
Giving one an exhilarating experience of exploring our beautiful country with the thrill and convenience that only a motorcycle can offer.

I can't say enough good things about our experience with Nordic Visitor. They thought of everything beforehand--as a result, I had a stress-free, fun-filled vacation with no negative surprises.
It was the perfect blend of independence, comforts through great accommodations in easy locations, and the help of getting to and from the airport was super. Just enough to take away the hassles and give me time to enjoy the location and adventure. Would not change a single thing. Our guide Christina was very knowledgable of culture and history. Lots of old sagas.
And we had non stop destinations of wonder Norway was simply spectacularly beautiful. Thank you for making our arrangements so easy. Sara was great to work with. The whole service was excellent.
Kolbrun kept us informed beforehand of the arrangements she was making and answered our queries promptly and clearly. All the timings and arrangements worked out with no complications leading to a relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable holiday.
We had a great holiday and we were delighted with all the arrangements that Nordic Visitor made for us which all went to plan. We had never heard of Nordic Visitor before we booked but found them on the Internet when we were researching holidays to Iceland.
We particularly liked the opportunity to contact our consultant on a toll free number in advance to discuss our requirements. The consultant was able to adapt the tour in the brochure to meet our needs and was very prompt in contacting us with a bespoke itinerary and a quote. We were very pleased with the documentation we received on arrival. The map of Iceland and the itinerary were particularly useful, especially with suggestions for activities.
We had said that we were interested in hiking and we were given ideas on potential areas to explore. Thank goodness for the phone that was provided. We had no bad experiences. Wonderful staff at all locations. We totally enjoyed our trip. The map with all the details on it was so helpful.
We espescially liked the extra comments like "great homemade ice cream" (it was great. With all the information in our itinerary as well as the "Icelands Highlights" portion of the "book" we were able to see almost every item in them. We travelled with ease. We have already recommended Nordic Visitor to friends who are thinking of going to Iceland now that we have told them how beautiful it is. We did tell them "dress warm".
